I discovered that, up to a certain rather lofty price point (two or three grand or even more), many watches use the same exact movements, with the main differences in the watch being the style and execution. Oh, and the brand name. That'll jack up the price, irrespective of the inherent quality. So, after all was said and done (and after realizing that what I really wanted was a Zenith "El Primero" -- oh yeah!), I was at least able to come up with a criteria for a watch that I might be able to afford.
I did not want to spend more than $1000. I wanted a relatively clean, uncluttered face. So many watches are so busy looking that you cannot simply glance at them and tell the time! Luminox Field 42mm 1827 Ivory Dial Brown Leather Mens Watch
I've spent years trying to find the perfect watch. I'm a Marine so I've been through the Timex, all the G-shocks, and even a Victorinox Automatic. All of these pale in comparison to the Luminox 1827 Field Watch. It's got a rugged thick case, screw-down crown, and good down to 200 meters. But best of all is the tritium dial. I travel through a lot of time zones and I'm always checking my watch at night to make sure I haven't overslept. With the other watches, that would quickly run down the battery or I'd have to fumble for a light switch because the illumination had faded after an hour or so. But this baby shines like an angel from heaven! And the tritium has a 25 year warranty. Don't waste your time on another watch. Buy this one and you can sleep at... Read more

Overall pleased, but..., July 8, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Luminox Field 42mm 1827 Ivory Dial Brown Leather Mens Watch (Watch) I am by no means an expert - I only just got into watches, and this is the most expensive one I own (thus far!) With that said, I am overall very pleased with the 1827, expect for two small issues noted below.
First and foremost, it is a handsome watch. My wardrobe style is classy and understated, and this watch fits the bill perfectly. A very easy to read face, cream background, simple date/time format...this watch epitomizes refined masculinity.
The watch band is rugged looking, but finished well. The stitching is clean and shows care in it's assembly. The buckle has two teeth instead of one - likely due to the fact that the leather used for the band is heavy, and would likely put strain on a single tooth. Also the buckle has a roller - nice touch! It makes it so much easier to adjust the band.
The illumination is easy to see at night. I like that the 12 o'clock position is an offset color (hazmat orange) than the rest of the illuminations... Read more
